Wink How to get rid of our RK3188 device.. aka.. is there life after rockchip?

Let's start an odd topic for this RK3188 forum: How to get rid of our RK3188 device

As many of many you might have noticed: the RK3188 isn't really living up to the expectations set by the RK3066. Playing videos is probably what most people want to use it for and it just happens to be incapable of doing that. Strauzo has a workaround but doesn't want to share the source code until rockchip explains him why they suck so hard. Strauzo also said he does this to discourage people from buying rockchips.

Before we all doze off waiting for rockchip to come out of the closet. I would like to look at strauzo's advice. Let's all ditch our RK3188 devices. It's low power footprint doesn't make it as good a heater or coffee warmer as an AMD or Intel, so I turned my into an ubuntu based webserver running apache, mysql, tomcat, solr, php, etc. In this way it can do what it's best at: don't produce video

Now then, how can we go on with our lives? What should we buy? Before buying a RK3188 I did some research into the alternatives. Basically it comes down to (ordered from faster to slower): the RK3188, A31 and i.MX6.

Why is it though that there seems to be so little kernel/rom hacking activity for the A31 and i.MX6. What's the fun of having an android stick if you can't hack it?

Both the A31 and i.MX6 have their kernel sources released, if I remember well. Why then is there so little activity?

Why aren't there any android sticks on the market with "proper" chips like samsung? (with a stick "100% certified china-free" )

So people, please help me out: is there life after rockchip and what does it look like????

One possible future is the quad core Amlogic M8, with an octa core Mali 450.

It is supposed to be able to drive 4k2k, but as long as it does 1080p properly it'll do for me.

The M8 looks good op paper, we'll have to wait for some benchmark results.

It might be quite expensive though:

According to androidpc.es, the new model is expected to go on sale at the end of July for around the $200 mark.

And it features Android 4.1??? That doesn't sound very promising

It is true though that the RK3188 basically has the same Mali as the RK3066, maybe it's clocked higher but you can easily overclock the RK3066 Mali too. So from the GFX the RK3188 is not much of an upgrade compared with the RK3066.

They said on their site it will 20-25 USD more than dual core box. So hopefully not 200$ I guess like on the KR3188 the first release is with stable android 4.1 and then they update. But we will see it in the next weeks.

Best is the GPU: Mali-450 GPU (Octa), double perfomance of Mali-400.

How about this? Cyanogenmod for the A31:

It seems to be made for tablets. Not sure if it would run on an A31 stick.

    Minix Neo x7

Well, personally, even though its Rk3188, I am thinking the Minix Neo x7 Engineers will do better with video, webcam, etc. and Finless Bob will get a free one from them and that will be all she wrote for the tronsmart camp and this Rockchip problem. I do not think Minix Engineers will put out an inferior product. It is suppose to come by the end of this month. They use the rockchip 3188, but will probably have a video solution, or at least advertise it working. It wouldn't hurt for Finless Bob to see if they do have a solution if he has a speed dial to their engineers. hint hint. JMHO

I modded mine to solve the overheating issues but this devise has major software issues. I am thinking about selling it but I dont want to sell it to someone I know knowing how bad it is so Im kinda stuck.

I'm still waiting for the big boys. Anyone test a Samsung HomeSync or Huawei MediaQ. Both these devices are late to the table.

This one has a samsung processor:

F9 Quad Core Google Android 4.2.1 Exynos 4412 Cortex-A9 1.6GHz Mini TV BOX HDMI HDD Player 1GB/8GB WiFi with Air Mouse

$124 for a 1gb device seems quite expensive though

    I have the 2GB version from http://www.w2comp.com/detail.asp?cat...4&pdtid=700200
Works well for movies @ 1080p but there are some redraw issues on the Android UI which cause the screen to glitch occasionally. YWTerminal are still working on a fix . . .

Intresting, if we put glitch problem aside. Is video in general smoother than RK3066/RK3188 in your opinion?

Yes, with no modifications XBMC runs well @ 1080p with hwaccel, remember this is the same chipset as inside the Galaxy S3 !

Sorry, I do not use Netflix, though there should be no reason why it would not work.
