Will RIM survive?

Lol.... well yes and no...

My Dad.... He is a guy that many would like to be like. He is a WWII vet, Bronze Star, 2 purple hearts, and would probably kick most peoples asses right now
He is 89 and still lives on his own. Takes care himself, still drives a car, and lives like he is 60.

Honestly they don't make MEN like that anymore in my opinion. Hell I have friends who's Dad is 70 and already in a nursing home.

So do I hate being like my Dad? Well to some extent I wish I was more like him! In others hell no. Yes I remember growing up and saying "damn I will never do that to my kids"..... OR "I would not do things that way"... etc.

So am I like my Dad? Yes in some way... But also in my own way. I think more people in this world need Dad's like I have. Now as I am older and can appreciate and understand, I was and am, damn lucky to have been born with the parents I had!

And just to say... Am I like my Dad? If someone tells me so all I will say is,,,,, "SURE"! AND DAMN PROUD OF IT!

Now if I could just figure out all the ASS KICKINGS I got and why

Hey Bob,

You and I have a very similar background. I was on ARPANET (when I was in the military--I got out in 83), and Usenet, too. CI$, Genie, AppleLink, and AppleLink PE, and AOL back in the day. Remember uucp?

Did you ever get to play around with the original implementation of Smalltalk? When I saw the article on it in a 1981(?) issue of BYTE, I was floored. Then... Jobs lifted it.

I loved the way the Atari 800 did Player Missile Graphics. So much easier than on the Apple II where everything including collisions had to be tracked manually and shapes had to be pre-shifted to preserve color.

I do think the experience we've had in our lives is relevant and it's never showing off when you have a great background, in my book, sir. Our pasts make us who we are.

If I was going to get into writing APPs, I think I would go the Android route. All of it is free, there is plenty of documentation and tutorial that are free, etc.

AND I personally think Android will be the majority in a year over iOS.

Free is good. It would probably be cheaper. I would have to buy an Android phone and line. Still, that may be cheaper in the long run than buying a Mac. Then again, I do so like iMovie on Mac's.

Or buy one of the cheap china Android Tablets.

Only gotcha here is what SDK do you want to develop in?

Gingerbread is the most common today but that will change fast over the next year to Ice Cream Sandwich.
This is one problem Android has. They come out with a new OS every 6 months. However if your smart about it many apps will work across all SDKs.

I was checking into this earlier today during a lull. It is confusing. I'm wondering if there is a developers roadmap? The coding looks simple enough, though. I've written using the Toolbox on Mac's (in the 90's) and MPW, so I'm thinking keeping code that works in one version of an OS over another is a matter of following programming guidelines, which I've yet to find, as well.

Back in October 2010 I bought an HTC HD7 windows phone and then ended up with contract and new Blackberry Torch in February 2011. I mainly went with it for BBM however this year I went from using it at work abroad with wifi's available to having no wifi's and not being able to afford data roaming I moved back to my windows phone HD7.

I just find the windows phone interface great - its all swipe controlled and makes perfect sense on a smaller screen. The Blackberry's operating system is still tied to hard keys rather than touchscreen - and with the keyboard being the "key" blackberry feature I can't see this changing. However this leaves RIM in the position of lacking the sparkle factor, and so Blackberry's will probably end up going back to being a business phone for the email integration.

I suspect RIM will survive, or may be taken over but not as anything as large as the have reached in the last few years.

I didn't think it was as big a deal as it is, but right now (as posted earlier) RIM is under US Government life support. The contracts government agencies have with RIM are just too good for the government to shed. I truly hope the new RIM stuff is better than their old stuff, but like the Palm, perhaps it is dodo time.
